Details About the
On-Call Program
When an abuse report is called in, it is the responsibility of the Department of Children and Families Protective Investigators to go to the home and investigate the case. The PI decides if it's in the best interest of the child to be removed from the home. If the child is removed, the PI brings the child to the local DCF office to begin their work: looking for a suitable relative with whom to place the child, necessary legal paperwork, initiating a foster care placement request (if a relative is not found), etc. The PI will contact an On Call Volunteer from the current month's schedule.

The PI will give pertinent case information to the volunteer and it is the volunteer's responsibility to arrive at the PI's office within 45 minutes. The DCF provides rooms nearby for the Lea's Place Volunteer to care for the child. These rooms offer a homelike environment which include: bath/shower facilities, clean clothes, food, a playroom (equipped with toys, games, books, TV/VCR, appropriate videos, etc.), and a place to rest/sleep (cribs for babies, cots/mattresses for older children). The volunteer is with the child until the PI secures a placement with a suitable relative or a foster home.
