Lea’s Place
Volunteer Friends

In 1991 the Volunteer Friends Program began and was designed to provide a positive role model (mentor) for a child as he or she moves through the foster care system. Foster care counselors prepare a list of children who may benefit from having a Volunteer Friend. This list is sent to the Volunteer Coordinator who maintains a list of responsible, caring adults of whom have volunteered to provide a stable relationship by participating in the Volunteer Friends Program. A volunteer is matched up with a compatible foster child.

The Volunteer Friend takes the child on community outings and forms a friendship with the child. Volunteer Friends commit to continuing this friendship for a minimum of one year or until the child leaves foster care, whichever comes first. In some cases, this has resulted in the Volunteer Friend becoming a foster parent and/or adopting the child he or she has mentored.
